Substance dualism constitutes one of the central doctrines in René Descartes’ philosophy of mind. To establish the real distinction between mind and body, Descartes advances several arguments, among which Neil Campbell discusses only two in A Brief Introduction to the Philosophy of Mind: the argument from methodic doubt and the argument from the indivisibility of the mind. Campbell contends that the former is philosophically incomplete because doubt represents a psychological attitude of the subject rather than a property of the object itself. He further argues that the latter is circular insofar as it presupposes the very immateriality it seeks to establish. Employing an analytical–critical method and drawing upon the metaphysical and epistemological principles of Islamic philosophy, this study re-examines Campbell’s objections. The analysis demonstrates that Campbell’s interpretation of the argument from methodic doubt rests upon an inadequate distinction between epistemic states and essential predicates. Although doubt is indeed a psychological state, it may legitimately function as an epistemic indicator for distinguishing essential from accidental attributes. Likewise, Campbell’s criticism of the indivisibility argument overlooks the logical structure of burhān innī (demonstration from effect to cause). Descartes does not assume the immateriality of the soul as a premise; rather, he infers it from the observed property of indivisibility. Consequently, the alleged circularity disappears once the argument is interpreted within its proper logical framework. The study concludes that Campbell’s objections do not decisively invalidate Descartes’ arguments for substance dualism. Moreover, the conceptual resources of Islamic philosophy—particularly its theories of essential predication, immateriality, and inferential demonstration—offer a more coherent philosophical account of the distinction between mind and body.
