Abstract
Iran possesses a distinctive classical heritage: Peripatetic (Mashā'ī), Illuminationist (Ishrāqī), Sadrian currents, and, for some, its classical schools (Khorasan, Shiraz, Tabriz, Isfahan, etc.). Recently, however, its theoretical-philosophical encounter with modernity and modern philosophies has generated new grounds and capacities, prompting philosophical reflections distinct from its long tradition. Over the past century, Iranians have turned to novel subjects, problems, methods, and approaches. Manifestly, contemporary Iran is undergoing new experiences and has entered a new atmosphere. Negatively, these new capacities, subjects, issues, discussions, experiences, and atmosphere are neither identically nor wholly containable within, subsumable under, or interpretable in terms of the heritage. Positively, the time has come to propose an independent field: "contemporary Iranian philosophy." This raises fundamental questions: first, what precisely is the meaning, content, referent, limits, and scope of this new atmosphere and experience? Second, can we speak of founding something new and distinct under this name? As an introductory treatment, this article addresses these aspects and answers these questions. It affirms the meaningfulness and possibility of such a field. The problematic of tradition and modernity has, in turn, led to the problem of contemporary Iranian philosophy.
