Abstract

In recent decades, the concept of happiness in education has evolved from a merely psychological experience into a philosophical, ethical, and social issue. Nel Noddings, a prominent philosopher of education, drawing on the theory of "ethics of care," regards happiness and the experience of being happy not as an accidental byproduct of learning, but as an intrinsic, ethical, and necessary goal of the educational process and the teaching-learning approach. Using an analytical-inferential research method, this article seeks to examine the role and place of happiness and a joyful life in Noddings' thought, to explain its relationship with concepts such as care, agency, dialogue, freedom, and social responsibility, and, on that basis, to derive educational implications. From Noddings' perspective, authentic happiness can only be shaped within the context of human and ethical relationships, particularly in the reciprocal relationship between teacher and student. In this framework, happiness is not a fleeting emotion but an interpersonal and ethical quality that emerges from acceptance, active listening, and the meaningful presence of the teacher in the educational process. Furthermore, the experience of genuine happiness is realized when a student lives in a school where freedom, justice, difference, and democratic participation are recognized. The findings of this study indicate that realizing happiness in the educational system requires establishing human and care-centered relationships, redefining the role of the teacher, paying attention to the student, restructuring the school environment, designing caring and dialogue-based settings, and moving away from test-oriented and hyper-competitive approaches. Drawing on Noddings' theory, this study proposes a school model in which "happiness" is not marginal but rather the ultimate aim and goal of education. Such a perspective can be a fundamental step toward enhancing the ethics of care, humanizing education, restoring the dignity of both teacher and student, and nurturing citizens who are participatory, meaning-seeking, and ethically oriented.
