The Encyclopedia Made Machine: Artificial Intelligence and the Impossibility of Truth in Badiou’s Philosophy

Abstract

Abstract: This paper reads the structural limits of Artificial Intelligence through the ontological and evental philosophy of Alain Badiou. It argues that AI systems including large language models, machine learning architectures, and data-driven algorithms operate exclusively within the domain of the situation, that is, the structured, countable, encyclopedic order of already-established knowledge. For this reason, AI cannot produce truth in Badiou’s sense: truth emerges only through a subject’s fidelity to an event that ruptures a situation from the point of its constitutive void. Through Badiou’s mathematical ontology, his logic of worlds, and his doctrine of truth procedures, I describe AI as an anti-generic machine: a system oriented toward discernibility, classification, prediction, and predicate-satisfaction rather than toward the indiscernible genericity of truth. It also examines AI in relation to Badiou’s four conditions of philosophy — science, art, politics, and love — and argues that AI can imitate outputs associated with these procedures without becoming the subject of a truth-procedure. This paper situates Badiou’s framework within contemporary philosophy of AI and argues that the irreducibility of truth to knowledge is at once the irreducibility of the subject to any computational architecture.
